FAQ

How can I buy your products from you directly?
Each week, we send out an e-mail that lists what produce we have currently available and the hours that we'll be open at our place @17357 Fox Ridge Lane Smithfield, VA 23430.  **If you would like to be added to our e-mail list, please contact us via e-mail at browdersfreshpickins@gmail.com

What kinds of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals are you using on your produce?
Our philosophy is to use as safe a product to control pests as we possibly can in the production of our vegetables.  We don’t like eating food with harsh chemicals sprayed all over it, and we know our customers don’t like it either!  Keeping the plants healthy (well watered, fertilized, picked, rotated, etc.) greatly decreases the opportunity for pests to invade.  If there were an outbreak of pests, we would spray them with an organically labeled product.  If organically labeled pesticides or management practices can't control the pest (which is rare) then we would go to Lowe's and get an over the counter product like seven dust.  We haven't ever purchased or used restricted use chemicals.

As for fertilizers we use a mix of natural and synthetic products.  Each row in the high tunnel greenhouse has an entire pick-up truck load of compost.  To the extent logistically possible, we also use natural compost on each of our rows outside in the plasticulture garden.  We do supplement that with some lime, 10-10-10, and gypsum.  Jake has a bachelor's and master's degree in horticulture from Virginia Tech with a specialty in growing substrates and fertility, so he has a strong understanding and particular appreciation for synthetic fertilizers.

No matter where you buy your produce from, it is always good practice to thoroughly wash your fruits and vegetables before consuming them.

Can you tell me more about the Browders?
Browder's Fresh Pickins is a dream of a young couple come true!  Jake is a former Peace Corps Volunteer and Virginia Tech Horticulture graduate.  Currently, he is a Soil Conservationist for NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service), a division of USDA.  Amanda teaches middle school science & coaches softball.

We met at Virginia Tech and have been married for a couple of years.  In our free time we enjoy working hard outside together gardening and landscaping.  To this business, Jake brings the brawn and the horticulture brains.  Amanda brings a little brawn and a lot of energy.  We are driven people with a strong work ethic and a passion for growing pretty much anything...especially healthy things that we can eat! :)
